PS5 has officially sold 50 million units. That number is accurate as of 9th December, 2023 – and reflects consoles sold directly to consumers, not shipped to retailers. It means the system took 161 weeks to achieve the milestone, just one week more than it took the PS4 to reach the same feat. Obviously, the new-gen system has spent much of its lifespan supply constrained thus far, with the issues only recently being fully resolved.
“Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners,” said outgoing boss Jim Ryan. “We’re grateful for all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles – so anyone who wants to get one can get one.”
According to a press release, excitement for PS5 propelled the platform holder to its biggest November on record. “This momentum has been driven by recent hits such as the critically acclaimed PS5 game Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games, as well as celebrated partner titles including Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios, and Alan Wake 2 from Remedy Entertainment and Epic Games. EA Sports FC 24, the newest entry from the perennial sports favourite, and the PlayStation debut of Roblox, which appeals to gamers of all ages, have also been hugely popular with the community.”

Congrats are definitely in order, they have some big third party exclusives coming so all they need now is to show some first party games and this gen is going to continue giving them strong sales.
Yet 3 yrs later exclusives still releasing on ps4. Really slaps every single ps5 owner in the face. Sony owns multiple studios BIG studios no way these studios can’t release 3 4 games every yr. Bungie milking destiny 2 for ages now, ND milking TLO for ages shows where we’re with exclusives. Insomniac and Santa Monica releasing 2 games every 3 4 yrs isnt enough to keep us happy

Whatever you do, do. not. tell. anyone. how you would have one studio release 3 or 4 exclusive titles every single year. Whatever development pipeline you've got cooking there is quite literally unheard of and it will make you a flippin fortune if you can sell it, because no dev can do it.

What I definitely DON'T want is games announced 5+ years before release like Wolverine, or even games announced so far before release that they might not ever release, like TLOU Online / Factions 2 (though that is a special case due to it originally being part of 2020s TLOU2) or games that keep getting delayed and delayed because they gave them a date when they didn't need to.
But they've gone too far the other way. We should have a reasonable idea of what is coming in the next 6-12 months but leaving room both for some surprises and for things to change.
@HonestTruth Where's your hate towards xbox or is it just playstation you have an agenda with? Playstation actually have gave its players more next gen only games than xbox so far, playstation actually had next gen exclusives ready to play on launch day unlike xbox. Xbox went 16 months without a AAA first party game, Sony have atleast always gave us 1 or 2 and some DLC, and then some decent third party AAA exclusives to keep us busy. So far this gen Sony have been supplying its players the most, and even gave us a new VR and Handheld Streaming device and giving players more ways to game, PlayStation are the only ones still giving us 3 free games per month on our lowest subscription service. Sony are the ones going all out with huge marketing and advertising and actually putting in hard work to sell its consoles and games unlike the competition who just want to spend billions to become relevant.
@HonestTruth I think that if the chip shortage hadn't happened, Sony would have simply abandoned the PS4 versions of all the cross-gen games and people wouldn't have cared (or known) that they were PS4 titles at some point.

Proud to say I was lucky enough to be a day one adopter , annoying cross gen releases aside it's been a very happy 3 years.

I still don't think the sales numbers for PS5 have been deserved but ultimately I really don't care. People really shouldn't care whether it's 50million or 30million unless they actually work for Sony.
The radio silence however really needs to massively improve. I spent £530 on my PSVR2 and for Sony to (apparently) have zero first party games in the pipeline is a disgusting way to treat fans.
It's impressive that it only took 1 extra week for PS5 to reach this goal compared to PS4 considering the stock shortages earlier in the PS5's lifespan and that the PS4 Pro released in 2016 so some PS4 owners will have upgraded for more power.

But I also think everyone gets so caught up in first party exclusives when in fact it's the minority of games we play. Look at this year basically Sony only Spider-man 2 other than PSVR games and MLB the Show. Yet was there ANY shortage of games to play in 2023? How many will have to carry over to be played in 2024 and beyond?
Frankly I don't care where the games come from as long as they keep coming, and right now, we are feasting, I can't keep up with all the releases.

I was hoping to avoid most of the info from the hack this week because of how it was gained, but one of the guys at work sent me a list of all of the games Insomniac has planned. I guess he figured I'm a fan of all of those franchises so I'd be hyped to see it.
And tbh this afternoon once I actually thought about it, that roadmap from Insomniac has me convinced that I'm playing games in the right place.
The first few months of 2024 are looking incredible too tbf.

I truly feel like the PS5’s success is based off of the loyalty PlayStation created with previous generations.
That’s the sole reason I bought a PS5 day 1, as did my friends. We loved previous generations.
Though, we’ve been pretty disappointed with the PS5 and don’t necessarily plan to buy a PS6 day one especially if it looks like they’ll support cross gen for three or more years into its life, because, what’s the point? Might as well just stick with the PS5.

@StonyKL So you have a massive backlog and you to more of a strain on yourself by getting a Gamepass sounds horrible. The reason I have the lowest tier with PS Plus is that i just don't have the time to finish games why get a extra to put even more pressure on yourself.

And dummies never read that Sony supported PS4 for 3 years after PS5 released, as there was almost 120mil PS4s out there and a massive shortage of PS5s. We have a lot of great games coming out one after another this year that even goty nomination was difficult and these trolls keep moaning there is no game to play, no exclusive, slap in the face for releasing on PS4 blah blah. I bought PS5 as soon as I got my hands on it, and never felt angry that most games were released on the previous gen. Sony could have followed Microsoft's way and announced games in 6-7 years in advance and gave minimal updates with every gameshow. But what is the point? They have definitely changed their stance since the TLOU 2 delay and subsequent plot leak (Some idiots justify the leak for the delay back then).

Impressive achievement considering all the issues Sony/ps5 had to face. I picked up mine 1,5yrs ago and it was in the right time when there was already VRR option out, M.2 ssd expansion enabled and some ps5 exclusives out too - really nothing to complain about ps5 itself since then, it's silent, dualsense is great, BC with ps4 works fine, performance modes bringing 40/60/120fps, etc. With the games I'm absolutely fine. Yes, I don't like GAAS approach, but if they still produce high quality SP games, I'm willing to forgive them Agree with what's mentioned above, that they should share roadmap at least for upcoming 12 months window just to know what to expect, but honestly it's clear they are working on games. With my backlog of games, I'm still busy so when it's ready let's bring it works well for me with only 1 exception which is Bluepoint studio - really would like to know the project they're up to

Great games is why the PS5 is flying off the shelves, it’s as simple as that. Gran Turismo 7, God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon: Forbidden West, Returnal, Demon’s Souls, Mile Morales, Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank.
High quality games have released during this console gen from Sony and that’s what it’s all about.
@sanderson72 to each their own but I like surprises. I can’t wait to see what Sony San Degio , Sony bend , Sony London , San Monica , sucker punch, asobi , bluepoint , firesprite , are all working on and I think they’ll be showing them off sooner the later.

Numbers. So Sony are outselling Xbox at 3-1. And Sony have sold 50m units. But Xbox have apparently only sold 7.1m units. Either Xbox have sold closer to 16m units, or Sony have sold just over 20m units. Imo the second set of numbers are much more accurate.
